National framework for the assurance of AI in government

The Australian Government's new AI framework draws on key contributions from Gradient Institute.

The report, titled "National framework for the assurance of artificial intelligence in government", outlines a joint approach to safe and responsible AI by Australian Federal, State, and Territory governments. It draws on the "Implementing Australia's AI Ethics Principles" report written by Gradient Institute and released jointly by Gradient Institute and the National AI Centre hosted by CSIRO in 2023.

The framework also highlights the technical paper "Using artificial intelligence to make decisions: Addressing the problem of algorithmic bias" which Gradient Institute wrote in collaboration with the Australian Human Rights Commission, Consumer Policy Research Centre, CHOICE, and CSIRO's Data61.

We are encouraged to see that the Australian federal, state and territory governments are working to ensure safe and responsible use of AI within government, and pleased that they have been able to build on some of the work from Gradient Institute.
