How we think about impact

Our theory of change sets out how our work contributes to our vision. We use it to measure and improve what we do, to test new opportunities against our path to impact, and to stay accountable — we make our claims about our impact public, so partners, funders and the public can hold us to them. It is a working hypothesis, and we expect it to evolve as we learn what works.

The problem

There is a gap between what AI can do and what people understand about it — and it is likely to widen as capabilities advance. Independent, human-centred, rigorous analysis is often missing when far-reaching decisions are made.

What we do

We build and share knowledge, put it into practice with developers, deployers and governing bodies, and act for systems change — because each is limited without the others.

The outcomes we work towards

Increased understanding of AI capabilities, impacts, risks and controls — leading to safer practice in organisations, stronger policy and governance, and more agency for society.

Our vision

The AI transformation benefits everyone: individuals, organisations and society gain from AI without being exposed to disproportionate risks.
